We’d like to share some news with our friends.

Many of you know that Elaine and I hold our faith dear to us. At a young age, we both left our homes and families to serve for eighteen months / two years as full-time missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I served on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, and Elaine in the Netherlands. Apart from learning the language and coming to love the people and respective cultures, we learned an immense amount about human relations, how similar we all are, and the unique value everyone, everywhere, each has on this earth. Not long after we were married, Elaine and I also lived and worked in Tokyo for 18 months and that was a wonderful experience where she came to know and love the Japanese people.

Along our life journey I have had the support of an incredible woman, my partner and wife, Elaine. We have been blessed with three wonderful children, who we are so proud of, and love very much, all forging their way through young adulthood.

Over the past year, we have had numerous experiences and inspiration in moments of quiet meditation, that it was time to consider what was most important at this stage of our lives. Not many of you know that 15 years ago, at age 38, Elaine was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s Disease. She is amazing and for the most part lives a full and active life. It comes with challenges for sure, but won’t shorten her life. However, each year gets a little tougher and will limit her physical activities more as she gets older. She is doing well but we have felt the strongest impressions to prioritize important things we can do now, that may be more difficult in 5, 10, 15yrs time and to take time now to invest in ‘us’ and have those experiences.

We have decided to take a year out of our usual activities, and starting on the 11th November will spend the next 12 months serving unpaid for our Church as full-time missionaries. We have been assigned to work in the Japan Tokyo North Mission’s head office - overseeing the mission administration, and then ministering to others whenever can we can to help others feel loved. Pursuing this service opportunity is important to both of us and reflects our most important values of helping others and giving of ourselves, to help the world experience more love in their lives, to come to know their Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and to experience true happiness despite the challenges we have in life. This has been our experience, and we want to help share that with others.

(I am certainly not retiring but taking a ‘spiritual’ sabbatical for 12 months, to spend in service and time with my treasured friend and wife. We will come back in late 2025 and I’ll be ready to hit the ground running on a new adventure ‘yet to be determined’.)

The experience we both had 30 years ago as missionaries in the early 90’s has shaped our lives and who we are, and we are so excited for the experience to come as we do it again, together. As we’ve shared these plans privately with a few friends and family over the last months, the most surprising reaction was how many people wish they could do the same, or are genuinely interested in doing something similar in their future lives (whether with their Church or other ways of giving / serving others). There is so much good in the world and we wish everyone to experience it as much as they can. We recognize how blessed we are to have this opportunity and how our journey to this decision came line upon line, through numerous examples, conversations, encouragement, questions and the experiences of many others impacting our lives. Most of them will never know and we are so thankful to them.

多くの方がご存じのように、エレインと私は信仰を大切にしています。若い頃、私たちはそれぞれ18ヶ月と2年間、末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会の専任宣教師として奉仕するため、家族や故郷を離れました。私は日本の南、九州で奉仕し、エレインはオランダで奉仕しました。言語を学び、現地の人々や文化を愛するようになっただけでなく、人間関係についても多くを学びました。私たちは皆、どれほど似ていて、そしてそれぞれの人がこの地上において持つ独自の価値について深く感じるようになりました。結婚後まもなく、エレインと私は東京に18ヶ月間住んで働き、その時、彼女は日本の人々を知り、深く愛するようになりました。
私たちの人生の旅の中で、私は素晴らしい女性、パートナーであり妻であるエレインの支えを受けてきました。私たちには3人の素晴らしい子供がいて、彼らが若い大人として自分の道を切り開いていく姿を誇りに思い、深く愛しています。
昨年一年間、私たちは静かな瞑想の中で、多くの経験やインスピレーションを受け、今の人生の段階で何が最も大切かを考える時が来たことを感じてきました。あまり知られていないことですが、15年前、エレインは38歳の時に早期発症パーキンソン病と診断されました。彼女は素晴らしく、主に充実した活動的な生活を送っています。もちろん挑戦はありますが、命を縮めることはありません。しかし、毎年少しずつ厳しくなり、歳を取るにつれて身体的な活動が制限されるようになるでしょう。彼女は元気ですが、5年、10年、15年先には難しくなるかもしれない重要なことを今優先し、私たちの「今」を大切にし、共に経験するために時間を使うべきだと強く感じました。
そこで私たちは、日常の活動を一年間休み、11月11日から次の12ヶ月間、私たちの教会のために無償でフルタイム宣教師として奉仕することに決めました。私たちは日本東京北伝道部の本部で奉仕する任務を与えられました。この奉仕の機会を追求することは、私たちにとって非常に重要であり、他者を助け、自分自身を捧げるという最も大切な価値観を反映しています。人々がもっと愛を感じ、天の御父、イエス・キリストを知り、人生の困難を乗り越えて真の幸せを体験する手助けをすることが私たちの経験であり、それを他の人々と分かち合いたいと願っています。 （私は退職するのではなく、12ヶ月間の「霊的な休暇」を取り、大切な友であり妻であるエレインとの時間を奉仕に捧げます。2025年末に戻り、また新しい冒険を楽しみにしています。）
30年前、1990年代初頭に宣教師として経験したことは、私たちの人生と人格を形作り、再び二人でその経験をすることに胸を躍らせています。この数ヶ月、友人や家族にこの計画を話す中で、最も驚いた反応は、同じことをしたいと願う人が多いことや、将来何か似たような奉仕を考えている人が多いということです（教会の奉仕に限らず、他の形で他者に仕えることも含まれます）。世界には多くの善があり、私たちは皆さんにもできるだけ多くそれを体験してほしいと願っています。この決断に至るまで、私たちがどれほど祝福され、他の人々の模範や会話、励まし、質問、そして多くの経験が私たちに影響を与えたかを実感しています。その多くの人々は私たちがどれほど感謝しているかを知ることはありませんが、心から感謝しています。
